Reports indicate that the Reserve Bank has begun distributing the 90th Year Silver Memento to current staff and those who retired after April 1, 2024. Individuals joining the Bank by March 31, 2025, are also eligible for this memento. However, we have not received information about whether retirees prior to April 2024 will be included in this distribution. This has caused some concern among this group of retirees.
We felt it important to express our views to the Hon. Governor regarding the Bank’s decision to discontinue the tradition of providing mementos to all retirees, a practice that was followed during the Silver Jubilee in 1985 and the Platinum Jubilee in 2010.
On September 23, 2024, we sent a letter to the governor outlining our concerns. View letter.
Some excerpts from that letter are given below:
Why RBI Memento to Retirees?
… “We believe that the value of this memento lies not in its monetary worth, but in the recognition, it bestows upon those who have dedicated their careers to the Bank.
Including those who have yet to join the Bank in this commemorative gesture is a kind one, but it should not overshadow the dedication of those who have already contributed significantly to the Bank’s success. Many of our members have served for over 40 years, constituting a substantial portion of the Bank’s 90-year journey. Excluding them from receiving this memento could be perceived as a slight to their loyalty and service.
The RBI has a commendable tradition of recognizing its employees. In 1985 and 2010, the Bank issued silver and gold coins to celebrate its Golden and Platinum Jubilees, respectively.
We, the retirees, continue to cherish these tokens of appreciation. We urge the Bank to uphold this tradition and include pre-April 2024 retirees in the distribution of the “RBI@90” Silver Memento.Excluding a significant portion of the retired workforce could set an unwelcome precedent for future anniversaries. We believe it is only fair to extend this memento to all retirees, irrespective of their retirement date.”
We expect a positive response from the bank and shall inform members about subsequent developments.
